Biography
İsmail Avcı was born on 19 May 1939 in Terkos-Durusu, Istanbul. He studied at Kepirtepe Village Institute Teacher Training School and the Painting and Crafts Department of Ankara Gazi Education Institute. In 1967-1968 he went to France on a Turkish state scholarship, trained at the National Education Institute of France and made studies after Cézanne and Van Gogh at the Louvre. He worked as an art educator from 1961 to 1973 and served at Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education from 1973 to 1999 as a faculty member, head of the main art branch and department chair. He received his Proficiency in Art degree in 1984, became associate professor in 1986 and professor in 1992. Between 1975 and 1985 he worked at the Alte Grafik-Çamlıca Art House printmaking workshops. He joined the founding staff of Işık University Faculty of Fine Arts in 2007 and taught in its Visual Arts Department from 2007 to 2019. In 1999 he published “Önce Desen Sonra Desen”. IMOGA lists him in intaglio/etching and notes that he continues working in his private studio. As of January 2013, he had held 19 solo exhibitions and participated in 124 group exhibitions. In the Orkun Ozan (Himmet ÖCAL) Art Gallery archive, he participated in #101 | Fevziye Schools Foundation Işık University Faculty of Fine Arts Faculty Members Exhibition (06.05.2009-06.06.2009).
