Biography
Süleyman Saim Tekcan was born in Trabzon in 1940. He graduated from the Painting and Sculpture Department of Ankara Gazi Education Institute in 1963. After completing his undergraduate studies in the Painting Department of Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, he completed his proficiency in art at Mimar Sinan University Faculty of Fine Arts. Between 1968 and 1975, he worked as a lecturer at Atatürk Education Faculty; in 1970, he conducted research on printmaking education in Germany for a year. In 1975, he joined the teaching staff of Mimar Sinan University Faculty of Fine Arts; in 1985, he became a professor and was appointed Head of the Graphic Arts Department. Between 1994 and 1995, he served as both Head of the Graphic Arts Department and Dean. In 1996, he founded the Yeditepe University Faculty of Fine Arts, which started its education in Büyükada, and served as its dean during its first academic year. He is the Founding Chairman of the Board of Directors of IMOGA-Istanbul Graphic Arts Museum and the founding dean of Işık University Faculty of Fine Arts. The expressionist influences in his early art gradually shifted towards an abstract and conceptual approach. In his compositions, he used concepts, shapes, letters, and numbers that shape human life, preserving their original meanings; he aimed to deepen the visual field of thought through depth of color and layers of perspective.
